brian greene explains superstring theory

24 April 2008 at 7:42 pm (science, ted)

he uses non-technical language to explain this most technical of subjects and i almost understand it now.  i understand the words he is saying, but the concepts are so big and foreign to me that my imagination struggles to grasp them.  i will watch it again soon.  wanted to share it with you because i found it so fascinating.

from the ted website: “In clear, nontechnical language, string theorist Brian Greene explains how our understanding of the universe has evolved from Einstein’s notions of gravity and space-time to superstring theory, where minuscule strands of energy vibrating in 11 dimensions create every particle and force in the universe. (This mind-bending theory may soon be put to the test at the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva.)

dave eggers ted prize

5 April 2008 at 2:41 pm (internet culture, ted)

author dave eggers gives an inspiring and engaging TEDtalk with some great ideas for getting kids involved in writing and helping them succeed in school. you’ve just got to see the pirate supply store in san francisco, the superhero supply store in brooklyn and the time travel mart in los angeles – all are actual stores as well as fronts for free tutoring centers.

this is part of a performance of swan lake by the acrobats of the great chinese state circus.  the thing that gets me is that some of the moves look impossible.
